Back then, they were making peanuts compared to what the superstars are making now.

And yeah, back then it was basically a gong show. There were no weight classes, you could wear shoes instead of being barefeet, you could wear boxing gloves if you wanted, you could be bare knuckle etc...

For those of you who are wondering or haven't heard, there is going to be an immediate rematch between Edgar and Maynard. Anthony Pettis was originally supposed to get the next shot at the belt in order to merge the UFC and WEC Lightweight championships, but after the fight was declared a draw, White changed his mind and is giving Maynard an immediate rematch.
the other day i was reading a magazine that talked about the 50 greatest fights and most of them were mma ones with some boxing sprinkled in towards the top. anyway i read that there wasn't really a time limit in the old days and that royce gracie once fought a 90 minute match. that had to have been one good ass fight.

Yeah, the early days didn't have a time limit. They still had 5 minute rounds like they do now, but there was not limit to ho wmany rounds a fight could be. The only way to win was submission, KO/TKO or by throwing in the towel. There were no decisions.

I haven't heard of the 90 minute fight, but it was a possibility based on the rules in the early days of the UFC.

I'd imagine so. I haven't heard anything to suggest otherwise, but if the rematch isn't relatively soon (anything later than the April card in Toronto), he may not want to wait because that would possibly leave him out of the Octagon for 8 months or so. If the wait would be too long, I think they may match him up against somebody like George Sotiropoulos and the winner of that will fight the winner of Edgar/Maynard 3.

    UFC 129
    GSP vs Shields
    Maynard vs Edgar III
    Couture vs Machida
I don't see why he will receive anything of significance. He didn't really get injured or suffer any serious cuts or anything like that. If anything, Edgar will probably receive a longer suspension than Maynard due to the thrashing Maynard put him through in the first round.

And what do you mean by the merging comment? Merge what, exactly? You can't really merge the WEC and UFC belts without having the WEC and UFC champions fight each other and it has been clearly stated that Edgar and Maynard are having an immediate rematch.

I was quite surprised that Edgar lasted the first round. There were a few times that I thought the ref would stop it.
Clay Guida is really rounding out his game. I love it. That was a fucking sick guillotine. He has to be getting close to a Lightweight title shot. He, Sotiropoulos, Pettis and Siver are all guys who are one win away from a title shot (even though Pettis would be number one contender were it not for the draw). The lightweight division is starting to rival the LHW division in terms of deepness.
Methinks Takanori Gomi is another one of them PRIDE legends who joined the UFC just as his prime as passed him. It's a shame, he could've made a good opponent for BJ a few years back during BJ's most recents LW title reign.
Who here is ordering 126? That looks like an even better card than this one.

it was either ufc 1,2, or 4 iirc. gracie was fightin an asian guy and the settings for the fight was no ref, and no time limit and rounds that were 15 minutes longs. not long after the 6th round ended gracie's brother either threw in the towel for some reason, or he lost somehow to the asian guy. im going to look at the magazine again tomorrow to know for sure.

I believe the fight you are reffering to was Royce Gracie vs. Kazushi 'The Grace Hunter' Sakuraba which if I'm not mistaken happened at the 99 PRIDE Open-Weight Tournament. Sakuraba had beaten a fair few other Gracies so he was dubbed the Gracie Hunter and the fight with the most famous Gracie was set up. They made it pretty much no holds barred because they wanted to have the best fight possible.
