It's been a while since I've checked on Lebron's chase to eclipse Kareem's career points scored record. Let's see how close he is.
Part 1: Kareem's Points
Kareem scored 38,387 points in his career. This is the total Lebron needs to reach to become the all time points leader.
Part 2: Lebron's Points Pre-Sim League
From his rookie year through the 2007-2008 season, Lebron scored 10,689 points. He was then 27,698 away from the record.
Part 3: Lebron's Points Sim League Seasons 1-7
In the first 7 seasons of the sim league, Lebron scored 16,996 points. This brought his career total to 27,685 points. He was then 10,702 points away from Kareem.
Part 4: Lebron's Points Season 8
So far, James has averaged 34.7 points per game. If he keeps that up for 80 games, he will score 2,776 points. This will bring him past the 30k mark to 30,461 and leave him just 7,926 points away from the record.
Part 5: The Future
Lebron is now 30 years old. In the next three seasons, he only needs to score 33 points per game to pass Kareem's record if he plays the full schedule. If he plays in 70 games per year over the next 4 years, he only needs 28.3 points per game. Lebron is going to pass Kareem for sure.
Part 6: How High?
How high can James set the record? Let's go back and say at the end of season 8, he will have 30,461 points. That is the starting point. James could play until he is 38, which would mean 8 more seasons. In that case, he needs 2,443 points per season to reach 50,000 points. If he plays 77 games per year, he needs to average 31.7 points per game. The combination of playing 8 years, staying that healthy, and maintaining that scoring average is low, but it is possible.
